SERVING

Serving of Food

In 1980, the Committee decided to provide free vegetarian food to devotees and the general public. The Committee did the cooking at the Thaneerpanthal site at Jalan Waterfall near to the main activity area. The cooking was done by our staff members namely Mr. Veeriah, USM telephone operator and Mr. K. Balachandra from School of Physics. The USM Students assisted in cutting vegetables and serving lunch to the public.

USM Thaneerpanthal Goes Green from 2005

In line with USM’s Transformation program for sustainable development, the Sekretariat Khidmat Masyarakat Thaipusam started serving food and drinks in self-sustaining paradigm.

On Thaipusam day, consumable on site, the Vegetarian is served on Stainless Steel plates, and at any one seating, about 100 to 120 devotess can be fed.

The advantages of this process of serving:

  1. The devotees would only take what their want and the portions only. Food is not wasted. As a result, more mouths could be fed.
  2. The food served is fresh and warm and the devotees can enjoy the food to their fullest satisfaction.
  3. No takeaways are allowed. This to ensure no littering within the compound.
  4. The devotees need not wait very long to be served as the queue is always moving.
  5. The amount of leftovers is very significant, only 2 -3 garden bags after having served more than 2000 devotees each night.
  6. The vicinity of the USM Panthal is always clean and free from polystyrene food packets and cups.
  7. About 20,000 devotees are served iced syrup drinks on both days via recyclable tumblers. Though, we encounter some loss of the cups, it is very insignificant
